September is National Recovery Month: Here’s What You Need To Know

Posted

Since its inception in 1989, National Recovery Month has championed the advancements in evidence-based treatment and recovery methodologies. Held every September, this observance pays tribute to the proud recovery community, dedicated service providers, and supportive communities who together champion the cause of recovery in all its multifaceted forms.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) uses this month as a platform to push for a national understanding of mental health and substance abuse recovery. Through the years, SAMHSA has strategically unveiled initiatives and granted funds during Recovery Month, partnering with both private and public sectors to honor individuals navigating the path of long-term recovery.

Looking at one prime example, we have MiraVista Behavioral Health Center. In line with the month's objectives, the center has announced the expansion of its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance use recovery.

When asked for comments, Kimberley Lee from MiraVista underscores the mission, emphasizing, "It's essential for individuals to recognize the abundance of available resources and the powerful community support awaiting them." She further adds that the goal is to ensure every individual's journey culminates in a life imbued with purpose and fulfillment.

Enhancing their commitment during Recovery Month, the center is introducing evening sessions to accommodate more individuals, ensuring language is not a barrier by offering these sessions in both Spanish and English. These sessions, aimed at bolstering therapeutic recovery services, will run from Tuesday through Thursday, 5 to 8:30 p.m.

With more centers following the state of affairs with National Recovery Month not only serves as a poignant reminder of lives lost to overdose but also shines a light on the collective effort to eradicate the stigma attached to substance-related challenges, emphasizing that recovery, support, and hope are within reach for everyone.
